I know, I know. It’s the middle of July, how dare I start speaking the words “back-to-school?” But let’s be real, school is going to be starting before we know it, especially for those in the middle of their university years. Chatting about tests and lectures is probably not how you want to spend your Monday, so we’ll skip over all of that and get to the good stuff: skincare.
I used to never take care of my skin during my college years and it’s one of my biggest regrets. I was super guilty of sleeping in my makeup (I somehow thought that my eyelashes looked better with mascara put on over second-day mascara) and I know for a fact I didn’t own facewash. While my skin wasn’t terrible, I did deal with a plethora of blackheads and very painful cystic-like pimples along my lip and nose. A couple weeks after I met Dustin, I had the worst pimple of my life appear on my upper lip and skipped class a few days in a row so he wouldn’t see it. I still have a scar from it and you would think that I would have started taking care of my skin after that, but I didn’t. I just “didn’t have the time” for skin care during my college days, but in all honesty, I was lazy and didn’t make the time.
About two years ago, I finally decided to get serious about skincare. It was all part of my journey to find ways to love my body again and to take care of it, instead of hate it. I simply started by washing my makeup off every night. I slowly added a moisturizer, toner, and exfoliator into my routine and before I knew it, my skin had drastically improved. One of the most exciting things about it all was that my makeup application became easier and looked more natural. Turns out, the secret to great makeup is having a great skincare regimen. I had no idea what I was missing out on!
I’ve also learned that it’s important to change up your skincare as the seasons change. In the winter, I’m very, VERY dry (especially living in the Southwest) and in the summer, I deal with a very oily t-zone (especially since I live in the Deep South.) Because my skin has different problems throughout the year, I change up my products so that I can target those issues specifically. It may sound a little pricey, having multiple skincare products for different times of the year, but it doesn’t have to be! I pick up the majority of my skincare products from Target because I can count on them to have affordable products that really work. I usually supplement those affordable products with a couple high-end products and am good to go!
Back to School Skin Care Line Up & Routine (Every Night):
After putting my hair up in a messy bun, I first take off my makeup using my Neutrogena® Makeup Wipes. These are my tried and true makeup wipes that I use every night to take my makeup off or wipe up any excess grime and dirt from the day. These do not irritate my skin like some other brands and do a great job of taking my mascara off without pulling my eyelashes out.
Next, I cleanse my face using the Clean & Clear® Blackhead Eraser Scrub. One thing I really struggle with during the summer-into-fall time of year is blackheads. I really like this exfoliating scrub from Clean & Clear that specifically targets blackheads. I use this 2-3 times a week so that I keep my skin feeling fresh without scrubbing it raw or drying it out.
I follow my cleanser with my Neutrogena® Acne Stress Control Toner. Toner is quite possibly my favorite part of my skincare routine because of what it does to help even out my skin tone and reduce redness. This specific one is perfect for back-to-school as the stress starts to build up. It’s formulated with MicroClear®, which is clinically proven to boost the delivery of acne medicine to unclog congested pores.
Finally, I apply my Caudalie Vinosource Intense Moisture Rescue Cream. Moisturizer is the most important part of my skincare routine and this one from Sephora is perfect for skin that’s drying out. This formula, particularly, is great for any skin care type and helps restore and heal dry skin!
Back-to-School Skincare Add-Ons:
My secret weapon for stubborn pimples is my Mario Badescu Drying Lotion: This is hands down the best spot treatment for stubborn pimples that I’ve used. I apply it at night with a cotton ball, go to sleep, and wake up with it completely gone. It does have a pretty strong smell and can sting if the pimple is open, but it truly works!
Finally, I finish my night with a large glass of water and an episode of whatever Netflix show I’m binge watching to unwind. Drinking water helps my skin stay hydrated and fresh looking and watching a show helps me unwind from a day of classes and not dream about math tests.
While we all have a few more weeks of the summer sun, it’s never too early to start planning out your skincare game. Right now, Target is running an awesome deal: Buy any one participating Neutrogena® facial, Neutrogena® cosmetic or Clean & Clear® facial product and get one 25% off from July-August 2016.
